Tomato sauce is one of the most commonly reported reflux triggers, which is a real loss for pasta night — but there are sauces that deliver a similar comfort-food feeling without the acidity.
Three alternatives
- A light olive oil and herb sauce (olive oil, garlic if tolerated, basil, and a little pasta water to bring it together)
- A cream-based sauce made with a light roux (flour and oat milk or low-fat milk) and parmesan, which is lower-acid than tomato though still worth watching for fat content
- A roasted red pepper and white bean sauce, blended smooth with a little vegetable broth, which gives a rich, slightly sweet flavor without tomato
If you can't give up tomato sauce entirely
Adding a pinch of baking soda to a small batch of tomato sauce neutralizes some of its acidity (this is a real culinary trick, not a home remedy for drinking on its own), and pairing it with a smaller portion alongside a protein and vegetable rather than a large bowl of pasta alone can reduce the overall impact.
A note on portion
Pasta itself, in large quantities, adds volume that can contribute to reflux regardless of sauce — a smaller pasta portion with more vegetables and protein tends to sit better than a large bowl of pasta as the main event.
