Breakfast is a useful meal to get right because it sets the tone for the rest of the day, and it's also one of the easiest meals to accidentally load with reflux triggers — citrus juice, coffee, and pastries are breakfast staples that hit almost every known trigger mechanism at once.
Building blocks that tend to work
- Oatmeal with banana, cinnamon, and a small amount of ground flaxseed
- Scrambled eggs (not fried in butter) with spinach
- Plain or low-fat yogurt with non-citrus fruit like melon or berries
- Whole-grain toast with a thin layer of almond butter
- A smoothie made with oat milk, banana, and spinach instead of citrus juice
What to swap out
Orange juice and grapefruit juice are two of the most reliably reported morning triggers; herbal tea, water, or a small amount of oat milk are easier substitutes. Coffee is trickier — some people tolerate a small cup with food, others need to cut it entirely, so it's worth testing rather than assuming.
None of this needs to be perfect every day. The goal is having two or three reliable go-to breakfasts you don't have to think about, so the rest of your food choices have more room to flex.
